It used to be that video games were all about the games themselves, and factors like game play and addictive quality dictated what was popular.

However, with the advances in gaming over the last ten or fifteen years, a new factor has come into play in an extremely large way: graphics. Where Nintendo once dominated the gaming console market, people now seem to prefer options like Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, largely on the grounds that these consoles tend to have inherently better graphics than, for example, the Nintendo Wii.
