Review – Football Genius – The Ultimate Quiz

Football genius I am not, I like the game but as many will tell you I’m never over fussed and couldn’t tell you the starting 11 for the team I support let alone any past teams. However I do have a few friends who are football mad so it seemed only right to get them involved in this review and finally there is my wife, enough said about that one I think.
We all crammed around the large screen TV on Wednesday afternoon watching England finally step up and win a World Cup game, on a high we then proceed to find out which one of us who the best football knowledge.
Handing out the big button pads I was slowly in my mind working out who I expected to win (easily the football genius, followed by me, then his fiancĂ©e and then my wife). As the game came to life we started to select our avatars, but hang on we didn’t seem to be able to. As I was playing on my profile I managed to pick up my Avatar but everyone else’s was provided by the game, this annoyed my wife a she wanted to be able to use her own off her profile and led to around 5 minutes of whining but luckily when the game got going she stopped and concentrated on winning.
With a playing style very similar to Scene it where some rounds are free for all and some require you to buzz in the game play felt very familiar but that’s not to say it was clear. We found some of the rounds were not clearly explained and could have had more detailed instructions (maybe even an option to have a practice round) and unfortunately the disappointment didn’t end there. Hoping we could all beat the genius by guess we randomly hit buttons to try and scrape what few points we could, however get an answer wrong and you lose the amount of points you would have won. This meant that the genius stormed of in to the lead and we were left floundering.
Things began to pick up again though towards the end where we found a round with easier questions and the ability to steal points. The 3 of us ganged up on the genius and managed to steal a significant amount of points.
We played a full time game (the term given to full length, a shorter game is referred to as half time) which took approximately 20 minutes to complete. This was a great length and the rounds came thick and fast during this time with out any elongated cut scenes to show scores or animations with dodgy voice overs (here’s looking at you Scene it).
Overall the game was good fun and played well once we realised what was happening. After a few play throughs we easily got the hang of the rounds and each time the genius won but the bottom 3 were mixed. With over 3,500 questions as well there is little chance of getting the same questions over and over a game should you decide to spend the evening playing. All in all for an arcade title this is an excellent, well put together and testing quiz. As an addition one of the buzz in sounds you can chose is the Vuvuzela made popular (or not) by the current world cup, showing either amazing foresight or quick updates from the developers showing that they care about the game. Also if you get tired of always beating your friends take on the world 3 people at a time through Xbox Live
Football Genius – The Ultimate Quiz does support Big Button pads which are supplied with the Scene It games but can be played without them using a regular Xbox 360 Controller.
Football Genius can be purchased through your Xbox 360 for 400 Microsoft Points until 27 July 2010 after which it can be purchased for 800 Microsoft Points, which still offers a great price for a great game.
