Review: Hector – Episode 1
Hip hip hoo-ray for the point and click adventure, now about as funny and half as long
Maybe I’m just a pessimist but I like a game I can get my teeth into!
First things first, sorry this isn’t our usual review as there is no retail version available for Hector. If you want this Telltale game, you’ll need to hit up Steam or Direct2drive for the download. While I have no issues with download only titles in principle, they seem to all hit a higher price point than retail and in my mind that should mean a better product.
Hector is a toilet humor point and click adventure which first came out on the iphone and probably should have stayed there. There are 4 areas to explore and 3 goals to achieve, with no obvious overarching plot. A madman has taken hostages and got you running around doing silly tasks, the most tricky taking around 20 minutes to go through all the subtext.
If you think back to the core point and clicks, there was no way to complete them in under an hour, however Hector is easy to polish off with time left for a coffee and donuts. I know it’s only episode 1, but this is around £7-10 which I feel should give more depth than the flash adventure games that Newgrounds offers for free!
The animation isn’t bad, and most of the characters are well voiced, hector is a little hard to hear sometimes but that’s not a huge problem. I’d probably suggest waiting for all the episodes to be released and wait for an offer!
If you have the insatiable urge for some adventuring in a grimy english setting then check out Hector on Direct2drive or Steam.
