Review: Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2

With Iron Man 2 going great guns at the cinema, will the inevitable film tie-in be as much fun?

And is it worth shelling out your hard-earned cash this summer….?

Whilst enjoyable in short doses, the original Iron Man game wasn’t great to be honest – like most tie-ins, it felt rushed and short on quality – the developers instead relying on the lucrative license to sell.

Iron Man 2Unfortunately, this sequel falls into the same trap – and worse, doesn’t even follow the plot of the film it is named after! Yup, this might as well be called Iron Man 3 as there’s little connecting to the events in the movie other than a few of the characters and original voices.

Here, Tony and best mate Rhodey team up to take out some evil Russians building a rival super-suit…rather different to the mysterious Whiplash and the rise of War Machine in the movie!

There’s the usual array of different melees, power-ups and a cool array of options for pimping up your unlockable suits (including an option to play as either Iron Man or the more aggressive War Machine on each mission) which adds interest – and a variety of levels that you’ll quickly race through.

Iron Man 2The poor graphics and presentation really let this down however. More at home on a PS2 or a Wii than Sony’s flagship machine, this feels like playing a game from a decade ago – with poor controls, camera angles and frame-rate issues. And naturally, there’s nothing in the way of online play either. I mean, even Transformers 2: the game had that!

And yet….the thing is, flying around as Iron Man is just, well…..fun. You’ll get a buzz taking out a factory with your customised lasers and missiles, as well as whizzing around at Mach 2 destroying helicopters and enemy ‘bots. Yes, if your inner kid is still very much active, then you might enjoy this (at the right price of course!).
