Review: Transformers – Revenge of the Fallen

Autobots, roll out! The new Transformers game hits the shops this week.

Out on June 26th across all formats and based on the smash-hit movie, will the game be an Optimus Prime purchase this summer?

OK, let’s face it, transforming robots are cool. Whether you’re new to the joy that is Transformers or a slightly-too-keen man-child who should know better, Hasbro’s robots in disguise are a cut above other toy-inspired franchises (err, GI Joe anyone?).

Robots + Vehicles = Awesome.

Graphically, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions get a facelift, with a story that closely follows the Michael Bay blockbuster (basically, Decepticons looking for revenge on Earth, with Bumblebee & the boys saving the day via mucho destruction, and Megan Fox in slow-motion).  However, in the game the twist is that players can either play as the heroic Autobots or the nasty Decepticons…saving the human race is in your (robotic) hands.

The online play is much improved over the previous Transformers: The Game with the usual types of modes (such as capture the flag, deathmatch and a fun ‘One shall stand’ mode where the leaders are the prime target) – plus in single player, there’s a more mission-based approach this time. As expected there are loads of cool ways to drive, fly, fight and cause mayhem. Fluid animations and authentic licensing make for a slick, immersive experience.

Nintendo DS owners also get the chance to buy distinct Autobot or Decepticon-themed games, whilst Nintendo Wii users can now have fun in co-op mode. Get those nunchucks ready!

Overall, this is a pretty good movie franchise game and worth checking out. It may not be a total Starscream but Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is certainly not an Iron Hide-ing to nothing.  Now, if only I could make that cool transforming noise…

Overall Score: 7 out of 10
